2003: D-NE900 CD Walkman: The Disc as Container

By the early 2000s, listening habits had already changed. The D-NE900 treated the compact disc as a container rather than a sequence. MP3s and ATRAC files coexisted, partly as a reluctant concession to file sharing rather than ideology. Anti-skip buffers grew enormous, and navigation mattered more than order. The CD was no longer the experience. It was just a carrier. The CD Walkman survived by behaving like something it technically wasn’t.
