A estreia dos LCD Soundsystem em álbum foi certamente uma das mais aguardadas dos últimos anos. Como se a redefinição das novas linguagens do mais urbano rock dependesse de James Murphy e companhia... É certo que quase três anos de singles certeiros como "Losing My Edge / Beat Connection", "Give It Up", "Yeah" e "Movement", além de inúmeras excelentes remisturas como DFA, hoje autênticos hinos das mais atrevidas culturas citadinas, justificam que o álbum fosse esperado com um interesse reforçado. O que não se justifica é que ele venha a ser desvalorizado pela sua comparação com os primeiros trabalhos avulso ou pelo facto de a música da banda não ser hoje apenas do domínio de um colégio de iluminados sempre trendy, mas de um público mais alargado, capaz de esgotar salas de espectáculos. A estreia dos LCD Soundsystem em álbum (como os discos de gente como os !!! ou Tussle, entre outros) salda-se num excelenete disco, daueles que têm a capacidade de persistir e que - tal como os trabalhos de referências (e suas fontes directas de inspiração) que se estendem dos Liquid Liquid aos Gang Of Four, dos The Fall aos New Order ou dos Clash aos Talking Heads - se irá afirmar como um marco essencial num dos mais dinâmicos períodos de regeneração do rock da última década. James Murphy não hesita em confessar a sua paixão pelo disco - e sempre que um músico do rock o faz, os resultados são aliciantes (lembrem-se de John Lydon... ou dos P.I.L.).

A Grande Ilusão

Before And After Brian Eno

Em 1995, a Microsoft lança para o mercado o seu primeiro sistema operativo da era multimédia, numa séria tentativa de morder verdadeiramente os calcanhares aos concorrentes Macintosh.
Brian Eno é, simbolicamente, o escolhido para sintetizar num breve instante wave a saudação do Windows 95 aos seus utentes - um par de segundos tão rico quanto desnecessário. Em 1978, em pleno auge do no wave, Eno compila "No New York", um disco demonstrativo e referenciável para entendermos parte da energia fugaz do movimento pré/pós-pumk nova-iorquino. James Chance, DNA, Mars e Teenage Jesus and the Jerks formaram os seleccionados por Eno para legar um ponto de partida ao movimento ou, quando muito, para apenas ficarmos com o instante possível de algo demasiado intenso para se prolongar no tempo. Hoje, quase 30 anos depois, recupera-se a música, mas também a suprema arte de estar no sítio certo na altura certa. Eno possuía essa qualidade quase ubíqua de se posicionar na linha da frente com a sua música e com a dos outros. Era assim em 1978, foi em 1995 e em mais uma boa mão cheia de oportunidades - Eno no momento oportuno, executando as suas estratégias oblíquas dentro da música contemporânea, movimentando e criando novas peças de um jogo demasiado grandioso para compreendermos em todo o seu fulgor.
Para uma história superficial da música, Eno representa paradoxalmente a figura menos óbvia de todas: a de esteta fundador da música ambiental moderna, o autor de "Music For Airports". Eis agora o melhor modo de retocarmos alguns pontos soltos e voltar a colocar Eno no panorama da pop - música pop para a qual contribuiu decisivamente nos dois primeiros álbuns dos Roxy Music. Depois, fruto de conflitos internos, Brian Eno decidiu desligar-se do grupo e construir sozinho e pausadamente a sua cartilha de canções. Apesar do longo caminho percorrido entre estes quatro discos que agora encontraram uma reedição cuidada (apenas remexendo o que era importante: o som), todos os álbuns fazem parte de um trajecto apenas, uma contínua busca feita de ideias fixas e resolutas convicções.
"Here Comes The Warm Jets" é a primeira declaração de princípios e a apresentação do Brian Eno pós-amizade de Bryan Ferry. Fúria eléctrica, velocidade de ponta, espasmos e convulsões ainda com trejeitos de glam recalcado. Humor corrosivo e surreal de quem quer chamar a atenção ("Baby's On Fire"); a manipulação como arte final ("Driving Me Backwards"); Eno anunciando Flying Lizards ("Dead Finks Don't Talk"). Está simultaneamente com um pé no seu passado e outro no futuro; e é talvez por isso mesmo que será apenas no segundo passo que a obra-prima nasce, no final de 1974 - "Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)". E daqui até à consumação final, com "Another Green World" (1975) e "Before And After Science" (1977), foi um grande pequeno passo. Mais conquistas, mais cenários plausíveis, mais gritos e mais silêncios e sobretudo muitas canções que ainda hoje fazem todo o sentido serem apelidados como clássicas. As estranhas emulsões de produções e as incontáveis horas de estúdio projectaram Eno para o futuro e não há quase nada nos dois últimos discos que nos agarre às décadas que já passaram - tal como a sua música de ambientes, de filmes, de aeroportos, tal como a sua conceptualização do quarto mundo com Jon Hassell. Mesmo nos momentos esforçados, houve sempre um sopro de agitada criatividade.
Com estes quatro discos, Eno legou ao mundo quatro pedras fundamentais e incontornáveis para a vanguarda da pop que são, simultaneamente, contínuas fases de maturação e evolução da canção enquanto forma acabada, do estúdio como ferramenta principal de trabalho, de exemplos definitivos sobre a colaboração e o aproveitamento das artes de outros músicos. Todas estas peças juntas demonstram a modernidade, a vanguarda dentro dos limites, a rebeldia controlada, a necessidade suprema de romper com dogmas e criar novas actualizações. A eterna reciclagem estética deste novo século obriga-nos a uma constante confusão temporal; as obras ganham réplicas e venerações, o presente ganha uma duplicidade de referências que nos destrói a ordem natural das coisas. Talvez se percam para sempre estes pontos fixos de referência, mas, em contrapartida, a fruição encarrega-nos da nova legitimidade temporal. É assim o papel das obras-primas: eternamente influenciadoras e construtivas. 30 anos depois da sua verdadeira contribuição histórica, Brian Eno volta a ser contemporâneo e moderno, demonstrando uma qualidade que, afinal, para muitas gerações, nunca esteve em dúvida.

Nota: Já com edição internacional, mas ainda sem confirmação e data marcadas para o mercado português, também alguns dos álbuns ambientais de Brian Eno vêem agora a luz do dia, devidamente recuperados, remasterizados e reembalados. Hipótese, portanto, de reavaliar outras ondas de choque e consequentes revoluções. "Discreet Music" (1975), "Ambient 1: Music For Airports" (1978), "Ambient 2: The Plateaux Of Mirror" (1980) e "Ambient 4: On Land" (1982) reformularam conceitos para uma nova música ambiental, assente no silêncio e numa ideia alrgada de espaço e tempo, como uma nova música contemporânea erudita. Recuperando as lições da vanguarda americana - dos drones de Pauline Oliveros ao repetitivismo de Reich -, Brian Eno conseguiu elaborar delicadas paisagens sonoras que flutuam em imponderabilidade perfeita entre a brisa ligeira da genial indiferença e o subtil engodo da atraente intelectualidade. Algo tão simples e complexo, tão aparentemente invisível, foi mais um dos golpes criativos de Eno que duraraiam uma eternidade. E fica a faltar "Fourth World, vol. 1 - Possible Musics", outra das suas milagrosas invenções de modernidade, agora na companhia de outro ilustre: Jon Hassell.

As Raincoats da portuguesa Ana da Silva foram um dos mais emblemáticos grupos da ressaca pós-punk londrina e figuras de proa da idade de ouro da histórica Rough Trade. "Odishape" e "Moving" são álbuns essenciais e documentos indispensáveis dum tempo em que o do-it-yourself e a livre iniciativa nos deixaram os seus mais artísticos e marcantes momentos e legados como o dos Young Marble Giants, David Thomas e, claro, os seus Pere Ubu, Eyeless In Gaza, Five Or Six, Rip Rig And Panic, Scritti Politti (de "Songs To Remember") ou The Felt (de "Crambling The Anticeptic Beauty"), entre muitos outros. "The Kitchen Tapes" consiste na gravação de um concerto histórico na sala nova iorquina em finais de 1982 e que originalmente apenas fora editado em cassete no ano seguinte. Pela primeira vez em CD, "The Kitchen Tapes" é um disco essencial para todos os apaixonados da banda, feito de repertório dos seus primeiros dois excelentes álbuns de originais, agora com a alma acrescida dos grandes momentos "live", com uma dinâmica e uma orgânica absolutamente desarmantes.
