Welcome To Electronic Sound

As you’ve probably worked out from the big numbers on the cover, we are rewinding back to 1981 for this month’s lead feature. We’ve been working on it for a while, ever since we first got wind of ‘Moving Away From The Pulsebeat: Post-Punk Britain 1977-1981’, a five-CD boxset on Cherry Red. It came out at the end of March, so you’ll find it in the shops now. It’s jam-packed with gems and the choice of tracks – 105 of them in total – sparked a lot of discussion in the Electronic Sound. Especially the selections for 1981, the end point for the collection.

Two years after Margaret Thatcher became prime minister and four years out from the heyday of punk, 1981 was a year of tremendous tension in the UK – politically, socially and culturally. Many of the country’s inner cities experienced a large-scale rioting in April and July, with pitched battles between angry youths and the police on the streets of London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and elsewhere. Still, who cared about things like high unemployment, poor housing and systemic racism? Not when there was the pomp and glitz of Charles and Diana’s wedding to enjoy on the telly.

When it came to music, one of the talking points of 1981 was the ever-increasing number of synthpop bands breaking into the UK mainstream charts, many of them climbing to the dizzying heights of the Top 10. At the same time, though, there was a dramatic surge in new independent talent, with the post-punk, industrial, goth rock, electro-dub, jangly pop, agit-prop, avant-jazz, mutant disco and so many more – and artists putting out their records on both established indies and previously unknown labels.

It all added up to an epic year for electronic, groovy, experimental and just plain brilliant music – whichever tribe you belonged to – and we’re telling the story of 1981 through 101 milestone releases, both singles and albums (and a couple of tapes). We think we’ve done a pretty good job but, as is the nature of these beasts, we’ll no doubt have neglected to include one or two of your favourites. At which point, we’d like to apologise to long-time ES reader Al Hine of Kirkwall for leaving The Flying Lizards’ ‘Fourth Wall’ album off the final list, although we hope he’ll be pleased to see Vivien Goldman in there.
