1997: MZ-R50 MD Walkman: Recorder Maturity
Portable recording existed long before MiniDisc, but MiniDisc made it feel native to digital life. With the MZ-R50, recording, editing, and titling settled into a usable rhythm. Battery life improved, reliability stabilized, and the machine receded just enough to let the act matter. Music stopped being something you merely played. It became something you assembled, named, and revised. The Walkman shifted from playback device to authorship tool.
